Who Doesn’t Love a Street Festival?

Weekends during the summer and early fall months in Washington, DC are full festivals, block parties, food tastings and free concerts. It is an absolutely wonderful time to be in the city. It does, however make deciding on which events to attend a frequent (but nice) challenge. Street festivals are my absolute favorite way to check out a new neighborhood. You can visit an area and get a feel (and more importantly a taste) of what it’s like all at once. My bias might be showing, but I think one of the best street festivals in Washington, DC is the held annually in the North East corridor of the city on H Street NE. It is my ‘backyard’.  This festival and surrounding area has evolved over the last 10 years from a paltry mix of vendors and attendees to a lengthy stretch of merriment that now extends well into the evening. The H Street Festival combines all of this revelry into one fantastic 10 block 7 hour party fit for families, foodies and party goers alike. We attended the festival on Saturday and must say it was better than in years past.

The musical performances were diverse and lively. The vendors upped their game (I fed my tee shirt addiction to the fullest). The neighborhood restaurants and bars made it difficult to deciding where to stop – fun and tantalizing food & drink specials were everywhere you turned. We walked, danced, laughed, nibbled and imbibed are way slowing down the street and back again just to be sure we didn’t miss anything.

Indulging in the food, music and connecting with the community were all great fun but the highlight for me this year was the Art Whino / G40 Art Summit takeover of an empty building space. Wow! This once sad and cavernous space was transformed into a temporary art lovers paradise complete with DJ and bar service. Every wall was covered with eye candy and thought provoking works of art. Have a peak a some of these gems.

If you are in or plan on visiting Washington, DC next weekend, then you are in luck.  There are 500 pieces of art in the space  at 700 H Street NE for your enjoyment.  The exhibit runs through Saturday, September 26.  You can find more information about the G40 Art Summit here.

I’m already looking forward to next year’s H Street Festival with more fabulous food, fun and great art.

What’s your favorite neighborhood event or city festival?

  1. The art is reminiscent of Wynwood. Awesome display of talent. Nice! I felt like I was there.
